In 2002 I wrote an article regarding the importance of brand design that had the opening line ‘Your brand is who you are and reflects everything you do'. That sentiment still holds true to this day - and I doubt it will ever change.
It sounds pretty simple - but get it wrong and suddenly the logo that is the keystone of your brand starts to let you down.
We need to start by making a distinction between a logo and a brand. Your logo is that physical ‘thing'; that emblem or that mark that you put at the top of letterheads, on your business cards and your website. Your brand is all encompassing - it takes your logo, your staff, your customers and clients, your ethos - and it brings it all to life.
It all starts with your logo, with your physical ID. Just like everything else in the creative world, designing a logo that looks nice is the easy part. Whereas designing a logo that looks amazing but talks directly to your target audience, that gives your company something to proudly stand behind AND is already capable of standing up and holding its own in the future as your company grows and becomes more successful - that's the real logo design challenge!
Application of your logo comes next. Simply applying it to stationery or a website or your e-marketing and thinking it's done will never hold true to the brand values you want to create and that will help build your business.
